Youcubed summer math
Youcubed is the online home for an approach to mathematics teaching and learning developed by a team of educators at Stanford University, led by professor Jo Boaler. The goals of Professor Boaler’s team are to engage and inspire mathematical thinking and competency in students of all ages by educating and empowering teachers to transform the latest research into accessible and practical resources and strategies.
Since 2019, the team at Youcubed have trained educators to host summer camps for mathematics, and since then, dozens of schools and districts across the U.S. have created camps based on the Youcubed model. A recent study of this nationwide implementation showed that campers experience a significant increase in mathematics achievement after the camp and throughout the following school year!
Rowland Hall is excited to announce that we’ll be hosting Youcubed Math Camps this summer! There will be two camps: one for rising 2nd and 3rd-graders led by second-grade teacher Tiya Karaus, and another for rising 4th and 5th graders led by fourth-grade teacher Marianne Love. These engaging, collaborative, and enriching camps will run from 8:30 - 11:30 AM the week of July 31-Aug 4, and they are intended for all students.

journalism.Do you love writing? Have you ever wanted to publish articles online, or have something you wrote go viral? In this class for budding writers, you'll work on all of the above and you learn how to be a junior journalist. You'll interview your friends, learn how to write really well, and craft weekly articles about events at your school. At the end of this class, you and your friends will team up to write a real article that will be published in a local newspaper!

SCUBA CAMP.Through a collaboration with Neptune Divers, we have arranged an opportunity to learn to SCUBA dive in the safety of a warm pool. Explorers will receive an SSI Explorer manual, allowing them to understand the underwater world. Campers will enjoy classroom activities, snacks and daily pool time in full SCUBA gear sized just for them. Learn how to keep our Oceans clean through the Blue Oceans program. Earn a 4Oceans bracelet by taking the pledge to help with ocean conservation efforts. Upon completion, campers will also receive their SCUBA Explorer Rating and Blue Oceans Speciality. While this week is not designed to end with a SCUBA certification, it does provide campers the opportunity to get their feet wet and participate in future Explorer activities as their interests allow. We will send permission forms to fill out and bring to the first day of camp.
Campers must be able to swim 12 meters without buoyancy aids. Required Equipment: swimsuit, towel, rash guard, mask, snorkel, and fins - all are available at the dive shop with a student discount.
