Leaders in Training

For campers entering grades 7 and 8

Introduction

The Leaders in Training (LIT) program helps campers develop important life skills such as leadership, communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities. Our LITs explore their curiosities in depth while developing skills specific to their chosen interest areas through innovative and engaging weekly experiences. As LITs, campers develop confidence by demonstrating what they've learned each week and build character through activities that emphasize personal, social, and ecological responsibility.

LIT Daily Life

The LIT program focuses on personal identity, peer relationships, and connecting to our SummerWorks camp community. We take a more outdoor/experience-based focus as our lens to address personal identity, friendship among LITs, and LITs' place and responsibilities at camp. Each week the group will take multiple field trips to various locations where they will play games, go on hikes, learn leadership skills, and participate in service projects. LITs also participate in daily goal-setting and reflection time to think about what they are experiencing. There is nothing that makes us happier than seeing our LITs grow to become our future staff members. Over the years, many of our most exceptional camp counselors have participated in the LIT program as campers.

Weekly Activities

Leadership Training

Each week our LITs practice their leadership skills. This can include planning an activity for a younger age group, leading a camp song, and helping plan and execute our all-camp Friday events.

Service Projects

Our LITs head off campus to complete a service project within the community each week. In previous summers, we've volunteered with Red Butte Garden, Utah Food Bank, Tracy Aviary, and YWCA Utah.

Field Trips

Each week our LITs go on many off-campus adventures, but one of these field trips is just for fun. The Utah Arts Festival, Snowbird Activity Center, and Midway Crater are some of our favorite places to visit.

Outdoor Adventures

Once a week our LITs put on their hiking boots and head into nature. Donut Falls, Fifth Water Hotsprings, and the Living Room are some of their favorite spots.
