Tech Camps

Two-week tech camps for students entering grades 3–8

Introduction

Get ready for an awesome tech adventure! These courses will introduce students to the exciting world of computer science in a fun and interactive way. Taught by Computer Science teacher at Rowland Hall, Mauricio Morán, students will learn amazing game design skills like programming, solving tricky puzzles, and even learning about how computers think like humans (Artificial Intelligence).

Sessions

Game Adventures in Minecraft (Grades 3–5)

From Imagination to Playable Games

Students will explore how game designers bring ideas to life as they design, build, and play their own video games. Using tools such as Minecraft Education, Construct, Flowlab, and MakeCode Arcade, students will transform their creativity into fully playable games.

Students will learn how to:

  • Design original characters and levels
  • Program obstacles such as lava pits, spikes, and other challenges
  • Add sound effects, music, and animation
  • Play, test, and refine their games

The course begins with beginner-friendly, block-based coding and gradually builds skills that prepare students for text-based programming. Each class wraps up with a special activity to keep the fun and creativity going!

Game Creator Lab (Grades 6–8)

Design and Build Entertaining Video Games

Students will design, program, and play their own video games in this hands-on class, focusing on creating games that are fun to play and share. Using platforms such as Minecraft Education, Construct, Flowlab, and MakeCode Arcade, students will bring their ideas to life.

As students build their games, they will develop core programming and design skills while crafting original game adventures. Finished games can be played on smartphones, tablets, or computers. Each class concludes with special activities to keep the fun going all summer long!
