Impact Documentary Filmmaking with splicer films

This course provides students with the technical and artistic skills to create socially impactful documentaries. By examining Splicer Films' social change documentaries and their accompanying impact campaigns, students will learn the process of raising awareness and creating social change through filmmaking. Through practical workshops and hands-on experience, students will create a socially impactful short documentary and impact campaign plan in groups with the goal of creating tangible change. At the end of the course, group film projects may be presented to community audiences.

Learning Objectives:
1. Gain an understanding and appreciation of documentary filmmaking for social change 
2. Utilize problem-strategizing skills and leadership skills to create social impact 
3. Exercise reflection through the creative process, learning to value diverse perspectives and multiple narratives 
4. Learn documentary filmmaking and team collaboration 
5. Complete a short documentary group project and form an impact campaign plan

Caroline Applegate is a Social Impact Development and Business Partnerships Intern at Splicer Films and a 2020 Rowland Hall alumna. She is currently pursuing her BFA in Broadcast Journalism and Documentary Film at Chapman University’s Dodge College. She is focused on telling stories about the climate change crisis and other social issues globally. She aims to combine her skills in her degree and her minor in political science to spark positive political and social change. At Splicer Films, she has been instrumental in social impact development and establishing partnerships to inspire the next generation of leaders through impactful stories.

Splicer Films Founder
Annette King is Producer and Director at Splicer Films. She founded the production company to tell impactful stories that inspire audiences to create a better world. She has years of experience in business development, social causes, producing, directing and establishing partnerships with academic institutions and civic organizations. At Splicer Films, she built a team of international talent to produce meaningful stories and engage future leaders. King is a member of the Documentary Producers Alliance (DPA), Women in Film and Video, Sundance Collab, and the Global Impact Producers Alliance (GIPA).

Pre-requisites: Students will bring their own laptop, a mobile phone camera and complete brief pre-work ahead of the program start.

​Do you love writing? Have you ever wanted to publish articles online, or have something you wrote go viral? In this class for budding writers, you'll work on all of the above and you learn how to be a junior journalist. You'll interview your friends, learn how to write really well, and craft weekly articles about events at your school. At the end of this class, you and your friends will team up to write a real article that will be published in a local newspaper!

Have you ever wanted to be a photographer? Well this is your chance! In this class, we will learn the basics of photography, in all of its forms. You'll learn about Composition, Lighting and other core strategies that allow professionals to take incredible photos. You'll also get to take pictures of campus, summer camp and nature

BIKE CAMP​.

Get the rules of the road. Bike Utah's Bicycle Education and Safety Training (BEST) Program teaches kids how to safely and confidently experience their community by bicycle.
Students learn:
The benefits of riding a bicycle
Helmet fitting
Bicycle safety checks
Navigating intersections and avoiding hazards
Right of way
Confidence and independence

SCUBA CAMP​.

Through a collaboration with Neptune Divers, we have arranged an opportunity to learn to SCUBA dive in the safety of a warm pool. Explorers will receive an SSI Explorer manual, allowing them to understand the underwater world. Campers will enjoy classroom activities, snacks and daily pool time in full SCUBA gear sized just for them. Learn how to keep our Oceans clean through the Blue Oceans program. Earn a 4Oceans bracelet by taking the pledge to help with ocean conservation efforts. Upon completion, campers will also receive their SCUBA Explorer Rating and Blue Oceans Speciality. While this week is not designed to end with a SCUBA certification, it does provide campers the opportunity to get their feet wet and participate in future Explorer activities as their interests allow.  We will send permission forms to fill out and bring to the first day of camp.

Campers must be able to swim 12 meters without buoyancy aids.
Required Equipment: swimsuit, towel, rash guard, mask, snorkel, and fins - all are available at the dive shop with a student discount.
